About letratu

letratu is a language-learning site with two halves. One is a set of written grammar courses. The other is a player that shows a song's lyrics with several layers running at once — the words as they are sung, a word-by-word literal rendering, and translations — so you can see how the sentence is actually built.

Where it stands today

The first course is Kazakh, and for now it is the only one; more languages are planned. Start at the Kazakh course.

Who it is for

Someone starting a language from nothing, in a script they may not read. Where a course has a language close enough to lean on, the shared words are marked as they come up, so what you already know is put to work instead of assumed — Kazakh is written for Turkish speakers that way, and the lessons still work if you speak no Turkish. Kazakh is printed in the official 2021 Latin alphabet, with Cyrillic one toggle away.

How the lessons are written

From published reference grammars and dictionaries, which are named on the Sources page. Every example in a lesson has to be traceable to a specific page or entry, and a check that runs on every build confirms the word really does appear in the source cited; the few examples that are not sourced that way have to say so and say why. The explanations, the comparisons and any mistakes are ours, not the authors'.

The songs

letratu hosts no audio and no video. Videos play through YouTube's own embedded player, and the lyrics are shown for study and commentary — translation, glossing and grammatical analysis. Rights in the songs stay with their owners.

On accuracy

The literal translations, etymologies and per-line grammar notes on the song pages are produced with AI assistance and reviewed by hand before they are published. Review catches a great deal and not everything, so treat them as study aids and check anything that matters against a dictionary or a grammar.
