Kazakh Conditionals and "If" Clauses

Kazakh grammar for beginners · Real and hypothetical conditions in {{-са / -се}} and counterfactuals with {{еді}}

To express conditions, requirements, or dependencies ("if you go", "when he arrives", "if it rains"), Kazakh uses the Conditional Mood (Şartty rai (Шартты рай)).

Unlike English which introduces conditions with a separate conjunction ("if"), Kazakh attaches the conditional suffix -sa / -se (-са / -се) directly to the verb stem, followed by personal endings.

This matches the Turkish conditional suffix -sa / -se (gitsen, gelse, yazsak) in both form and grammatical behavior.

Conditional suffix variants

Stem environmentBack vowel (a, o, ū, y (а, о, ұ, ы))Front vowel (ä, e, ö, ü, ı (ә, е, ө, ү, і))
Any verb stem (vowel or consonant)-sa (-са)-se (-се)

The conditional suffix attaches directly to the verb stem according to back-and-front vowel harmony.

The shapes of conditional verbs on bare stems (3rd person)

Attaching -sa / -se (-са / -се) directly to the stem forms the third-person conditional ("if he goes", "if she comes", "if it happens").

Back-vowel stem bar- (бар-) takes -sa (-са).

kelse келсе

Comparing Kazakh Conditionals to Turkish

The Kazakh conditional mood in -sa / -se (-са / -се) is the direct historical counterpart of Turkish -sa / -se.

1. Both languages attach the suffix directly to the verb stem (Kazakh bar-sa-m (бар-са-м) = Turkish var-sa-m / git-se-m, Kazakh kel-se-ñ (кел-се-ң) = Turkish gel-se-n).

2. In the 1st person plural, Kazakh preserves the archaic Turkic -k ending (barsaq (барсақ) = Turkish varsak / gitsek, kelsek (келсек) = Turkish gelsek).

3. Negative conditions insert the negative affix before -sa / -se (-са / -се) in both languages (Kazakh bar-ma-sa-q (бар-ма-са-қ) = Turkish git-me-se-k).

4. Counterfactual hypotheticals combine -sa / -se (-са / -се) with the past copula edı (еді) (matching Turkish -saydı / -seydi or -erdi).
