Kazakh grammar for beginners · The four, and the weather that comes with them

Season words are among the oldest a language keeps, and jaz (жаз), küz (күз) and qys (қыс) have come down to Kazakh and Turkish alike. Spring is where the two part: Kazakh has köktem (көктем), Turkish ilkbahar, and the words share nothing.

jaz жаз

summer · Turkish: yaz

küz күз

autumn · Turkish: sonbahar

Turkish keeps güz as well, beside sonbahar.

qys қыс

winter · Turkish: kış

mezgıl мезгіл

What the weather is doing

ystyq ыстық

hot · Turkish: sıcak

jyly жылы

warm · Turkish: ılık

salqyn салқын

chilly · Turkish: serin

suyq суық

cold · Turkish: soğuk

qar қар

snow · Turkish: kar

jañbyr жаңбыр

rain · Turkish: yağmur

jel жел

wind · Turkish: rüzgâr

Turkish has yel as well, beside rüzgâr.

What the sound rules do here

qys (қыс) and kış are one word with two substitutions between them: q (қ) where Turkish writes k, and s (с) where it writes ş.

küz (күз) and güz are separated by just one, the consonant Turkish voiced.
