Kazakh Reported and Narrative Past

Kazakh grammar for beginners · Hearsay, indirect evidence and surprise discoveries in {{-ыпты / -іпті / -пты / -пті}}

Kazakh distinguishes carefully between events you witnessed directly with your own eyes (the Simple Past in -dy / -dı (-ды / -ді)) and events you learned about indirectly through rumors, reports, or after-the-fact discovery.

To express reported speech, hearsay ("they say he went", "supposedly wrote"), or an unexpected realization ("I realize I had forgotten", "it turns out she came"), Kazakh uses the Reported Past Tense (Estılu ötken şaq (Естілу өткен шақ)).

This tense directly corresponds to the Turkish Duyulan Geçmiş Zaman in -mış / -miş / -muş / -müş (gitmiş, gelmiş, yazmış).

Reported past suffix variants

The verb stem ends inBack vowel (a, o, ū, y (а, о, ұ, ы))Front vowel (ä, e, ö, ü, ı (ә, е, ө, ү, і))
a consonant-ypty (-ыпты)-ıptı (-іпті)
a vowel-pty (-пты)-ptı (-пті)

The suffix attaches directly to the verb stem, adhering strictly to back-and-front vowel harmony.

The shapes of the reported past on bare stems

Attaching the suffix directly to the stem creates the third-person statement ("he reportedly said", "she apparently came").

Consonant stem ait- (айт-) with back vowel takes -ypty (-ыпты).

Comparing Kazakh Reported Past to Turkish

Modern Turkish combines un-witnessed past experiences and pure hearsay into the single suffix -mış / -miş / -muş / -müş (gelmiş, yazmış).

Kazakh splits these functions into two separate, precise grammatical tenses:

1. The experienced past and general past perfect use -ğan / -gen (-ған / -ген) (kelgen (келген), matching general geldi / gelmiş).

2. Pure hearsay, reported rumors, and surprise discoveries use -ypty / -ıptı (-ыпты / -іпті) (kelıptı (келіпті), matching gelmiş! / meğer gelmiş).

In the negative, Kazakh attaches -ma- / -me- (-ма- / -ме-) directly to the stem before -pty / -ptı (-пты / -пті) (kelmeptı (келмепті), matching Turkish gelmemiş).
